Eva's story:
Eva, when a gesture turns into an object
The Hair stick , I think is the first object I ever made.It was back in… I can’t remember – I’ve never kept track of anything. It must’ve been in 2001.
One of the gestures that struck me the most during my college years was one you’d notice during class, particularly if – like me – you weren’t paying attention to the teacher. Who’s never seen a girl put up her hair with a pen or pencil?
I’ve always been intrigued by that gesture – so carefree and elegant; but I’ve never figured out how a person’s hair can stay up with a mere pencil! hair stick
Anyway, it might have been to make a plastic model or for some other reason but I was holding some Plexiglas rods I could heat and mould into any shape I wanted. (Of course, I left the odd fingerprint too – I was loath to remember that when they were pliable they were scorching hot, too).
The parallel between the rods and the girls’ pens and pencils struck me then and there.
One thing led to another – a gesture, an idea, some material… And such a beautiful gesture could only turn into a sinuous, snake-like shape – and even before it was ready it had a name: Eva , of course.
And the head? A ball from a ball bearing. I realise not everyone has spare ball-bearings lying around the house (it’d be kind of dangerous, wouldn’t it?) but I was born into a household where high-precision mechanics ran in the family.
So finding a shiny steel ball for Eva ’s head was easy; the hard part was going to be making a hole in something made to withstand all sorts of wear, tear and perforation.
But that’s how things go – if you’re set on doing something at all costs then even a ball-bearing unit is going to give in out of sheer despair…
